Apple Butter

Fair warning: Our apple butter is not for the faint of heart. I make it exactly the way my mother did--with the most minimal recipe and maximum spice. Mom didn't write down much about her recipe, other than that it takes three quarts of applesauce to make a batch in our Aunt Alice Munro's antique roaster.

The bountiful apple harvest this year allowed me to start off with a double batch. It takes five to seven hours in the oven at 325 degrees. The aroma of deliciousness fills the house as it turns from applesauce and spices to dark and hearty apple butter.

Slather it on toast in the morning. Or try a peanut butter and apple butter sandwich for lunch.

Ingredients: homemade applesauce, apple cider vinegar, sugar, cloves, allspice, cinnamon
